Men of Action and Men of Thought

I have been a bit busy due to work-related travel. I have been writing on something but it is taking time. Also, I am reading Amitabha Bagchi's Half The Night Is Gone which has given me a lot of material to think about. I read this today.

"Not all men are made for action. In fact, action is sometimes the enemy of thought, the enemy of feeling. The man of action must still his mind before he acts, mustn't he? You cannot fire a cannon from a boat. The thinking man's mind is like a boat, isn't it? Always swaying from side to side, unable to stand firm and bear the recoil of a cannon. The man of action must, perforce, stop the process of questioning himself before he is ready to act, but the thinking man is so aware and so afraid of the dangers that certainty brings, he is unable to stop questioning himself. But don't reproach yourself for not being a man of action: the world needs both kinds of men. Just because we live in times that call out for men of action, times that challenge all of us to stand up and do something, let us not begin to think that men of thought are of no value. Perhaps they are more valuable now than they have ever been."
